How to Use the Built-In Ping Utility

The program uses the built-in ping utility to detect if Internet connection is available. It can detect Internet availability regardless of how you connect to the Internet (dial-up or LAN) and where the problems with connection come up (either you lose connection with your ISP, or the ISP has problems, or the server you are downloading from is rebooted, etc.)

Internet Connection Detector works by trying to reach the hosts supplied by you in the Ping Settings Window. If the program can reach any of the hosts, the Internet is considered to be available. When the Internet connection is available the indicator in the Statistics Window turns green, otherwise it turns red. If you have not supplied the hosts the indicator is grayed and the program assumes the Internet connection is available.

You can supply the hosts to ping in the Ping Settings Tab in the Options Dialog Box (Main Menu -> Tools -> Options). If you download from different servers, supply one or more reliable hosts such as yahoo.com or microsoft.com. If you add the servers to the ping hosts list, the program will assume that the Internet connection is unavailable if both servers could not be reached. If you download only from one server, a better alternative would be to ping the host you download from.
